What does it say...

...about either my child, or my parenting, that I didn't freak out yesterday?

I'm working on tidying the living room while watch/listening to a taped episode of "House" while the kids are out playing. The Kiddo comes in the door and tells me that the Munchkin is stuck in a tree. He's very calm about the whole thing, but after the baby rattlesnake episode a couple of years ago, I should know by now that the Kiddo staying calm in the face of danger is to be expected. I should have known better, but no, for some reason my brain decides she's got a foot stuck in a crevice or something. No biggie. Right?

Calmly adjust clothing, put on shoes, grab keys and lock door and head down the block.

First problem, she's stuck in a tree that does not belong to us nor to ANY of the kids they are playing with. She apparently got it in her head that nobody lives there, so it was okay to go play monkey-in-the-tree.

Second problem - stuck in a crevice? No thank you, ma'am, she's FIFTEEN FEET UP on a branch and can't figure out how to reverse in order to get back down. She peers down at me with just a hint of tears in her eyes and her voice and proclaims,

"Mom, I can't figure out how to get down! You're going to have to call the fire department!"

LOLOL! No, dear, we can do this without the fire department, thankyouverymuch. Back to the house, into Hubby's shed, pull down the extension ladder. Let the big strong boys carry it to the tree for me. Take 5 minutes to figure out how in the samhill you extend the stupid thing. Prop on tree. Remind Munchkin to sit up and stop leaning over to try and see what we're doing. Did I mention this is a magnolia tree with LOTS AND LOTS of branches between her and the ground?

Get ladder in place, start trying to verbalize how to hold on, turn around, and get feet on the ladder. I was just starting to think that I was going to have to go up there after her when another neighbor boy showed up, shinnied up the other side of the tree, got her turned right and got her feet on the ladder, so she was down in a jiffy.

She helped me carry the ladder back to the shed. And promptly went back to playing. Be still my beating heart.

So, does this mean I'm a great mom because I didn't freak out, or that I'm so used to this stuff by now it just doesn't faze me?

OTOH, I do find it funny that out of 6 boys and 1 girl, it was the GIRL who climbed the tree. Even if she did get stuck. :-D
