Thoughtful Thursday
Have you heard about the homeschooling problems in Germany? It's actually kind of old news by now, but I keep thinking about it from time to time. Some links:

This really brings home to me how lucky we are to be in America. Not only is legal everywhere in America to homeschool (although the accountability requirements vary from state to state) but if anyone tried to take away the right to homeschool, you'd have half the country nearly up in arms over it, even folks who don't homeschool but recognize the individual's right to decide for themself. America may not be morally going the way many of us would prefer it, but we are blessed to have the right to choose what we will or will not participate in. As long as we have the freedom to choose homeschooling, we can at least handle our own families the way that we choose, both morally and academically. And when we homeschool, we are raising another generation that will hopefully, in their turn, fight for those same freedoms and pass along those same personal values to even more people.
Germany feels that to allow homeschooling is not in the best interests of "the state". We are truly blessed to live in a unique country - one that fights, for the most part, for the best interests of the PEOPLE, not some nebulous entity. When you sit down today with your little ones, stop a moment and take time to be thankful for this wonderful privelege that we have, that families in other countries cannot enjoy unless they move and leave everything they've ever known.
