Poetry

On Monday, our homeschool book club will be meeting again, and this time we're not discussing a book, we're having a poetry workshop with a local poet. In preparation, we've been reading poetry each day at our house - at bedtime, after our regular story time, we each pick out a poem and read it aloud for all of us to hear. Between the 3 of us, we've read about 100 or more poems in the last few weeks!

I've been pleasantly surprised - Munchkin is the dramatic, imaginative one, so I figured she'd take to the poetry like a duck to water. Nope. She likes doing it each day, and doesn't fuss, but hasn't been actually interested in it. No, it's been the Kiddo who has fallen in love with poetry. At first he was very resistant (the second day we were going to read, he said, "But I've already picked my poem!" LOL) but after reading a poem by T.S. Eliot that was one of the poems used in the musical "CATS" and listening to said song from the soundtrack, he was hooked. He read every bit of "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" that I could find online (naturally, wouldn't you know I couldn't find my own copy!) and then moved on to the poetry of A.A. Milne. He's soaking it up and just loves it.

Knowing how much trouble he has with writing, he really surprised me yesterday by composing a poem of his own - with no prompting at all. He make take it to the poetry workshop on Monday, or he may see about writing a new one there, we'll see. In the meantime, I simply must share:

Leaving

Don't cry, say good-bye.
Someway, Somehow, I'll see you again.
It's sad, but don't cry.
Somehow, someday, I'll see you again.
We'll meet again someday, but for now I'm leaving.
It's sad, but for now, say good-bye.
You're calling "Don't go!" but I must.
Someday, sometime, We'll meet again.

Isn't that BEAUTIFUL?! Okay... I'm biased. Still. >grin<
