Must-Read Monday

Today I'd like to recommend "The City of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau. Although you don't realize it at first, it's a post-apocalyptic setting a few hundred years in the future. The two protagonists, boy and girl, are 12 years old and must save their failing society by solving the puzzle of a mangled set of instructions and bucking the local government.

This is a very, very clean book and extremely exciting. I had to practically pry it out of the Kiddo's hands one night at bedtime. I heard him around 9 saying, "This is so COOL!" which made me smile. At 10, I told him to go to bed. At 10:30 I suddenly realized that he was STILL awake - a very uncommon occurance for him! "But Mooooom! It's SO good!" was his reply. LOL That has never happened before or since.

The sequel, "The People of Sparks" isn't quite as good, but not by much. Both boys and girls will love the series because the two protagonists get fairly equal "screen" time. Give these a try, you won't be disappointed!
