Must-Read Monday
It's Monday!
Today's topic: must-reads. I was going to suggest books that your kids just "HAVE" to read, but for my first one, a book I checked out from the library last week:
"Chances Are: Adventures In Probability" by Michael Kaplan and Ellen Kaplan
This actually would be great for a high school math student, too, so it's homeschooling related. ;-) You wouldn't think a book about probability would be interesting, but this one is - and I'm only partway through it. Even the chapter on gambling is interesting, partly because it helped me unravel a probability problem I've been puzzling over for the last two weeks while reading the book "G Is For Googol".
There isn't a lot of hard math here (some algebra, but not enough to make you cross your eyes for more than a minute or so), it's mostly explanations with lots of good examples, brought down to Average Joe levels.
I didn't learn much about probability in high school. Permutations, yes, probability, no. When I get through with this book, I'm going to have a MUCH better understanding of probability.
