Appalled...

Teaching kids to fight back

BURLESON, Texas (AP) -- Youngsters in a suburban Fort Worth, Texas, school district are being taught not to sit there like good boys and girls with their hands folded if a gunman invades the classroom, but to rush him and hit him with everything they've got -- books, pencils, legs and arms.

There's much more to be read in the article. Frankly, I don't know what to think and which way to come down on this. Yes, it's true that school violence is an all-too real possibility these days, and everyone should know self-defense. Part of me says that this is a good thing to know.

BUT. I am just appalled that kids NEED to know this stuff. Teaching little kids how to attack a person? That sounds so much scarier than all the "duck and cover" drills that our parents had to go through. I am SO blessed to know that my kids won't have to be taught this kind of stuff, and won't have to be afraid to go to school.
